Yayasan Common Ground Indonesia Explores Non-Adversarial Human Rights Advocacy through Human Rights Due Diligence Training

The YCGI team takes part in a one day internal learning session on Human Rights Due Diligence, strengthening shared understanding on human rights based approaches to support social cohesion in Indonesia.

Yayasan Common Ground Indonesia (YCGI) held a one day internal learning course on Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) as part of its ongoing commitment to promote non adversarial approach in Human Rights advocacy in Indonesia. The session featured Mrs. Lany Harjanti, Regional Program Manager of the Global Reporting Initiative, as the main speaker.

The course introduced the YCGI team to the evolving global and national landscape of HRDD and explored its practical applications beyond corporate compliance. Discussions focused on how HRDD functions as a preventive framework to identify risks, address grievances, and reduce structural harms that often undermine trust between communities, institutions, and economic actors.

The session examined how HRDD principles intersect with peacebuilding practice, particularly in contexts of private sector engagement to reduce structural violent conflict. The training emphasized stakeholder engagement, early risk identification, and grievance mechanisms as tools that can strengthen dialogue and cooperation rather than deepen adversarial dynamics.

Mrs. Harjanti highlighted that HRDD is increasingly relevant not only for businesses but also for civil society organizations working at the intersection of human rights, development, and social cohesion. She underscored the importance of translating global standards into locally grounded approaches that respond to lived realities and community voices.

For YCGI, the training reinforced the organization’s belief that conflict and differences are natural, while violence and exclusion are not. By integrating HRDD perspectives into its work, YCGI aims to further strengthen its multipartial approach to conflict transformation, ensuring that human rights are addressed in ways that foster trust, inclusion, and collaboration across divides.

The learning session forms part of YCGI’s broader effort to equip its team with relevant knowledge and tools to engage constructively with communities, partners, and institutions, while contributing to a more cohesive and resilient Indonesian society.
